  • Hi Simon, What do you do with this limestone once you get it back to the studio? How do you process it and what volume do you use in your glaze? My son just moved north to Georgia (USA) and there is such tremendous kaolin and red clay deposits there that they must have limestone too, correct?? so I guess I'm heading north, Often! If you were making this trip, what would you bring back to your studio??

Regards, Debbie from warm and muggy Florida USA!!

  • Hi D - I dont think I replied to you....I am in the process of doing it so I'll let you know results soon.Red clay is always useful as a glaze base to work around .I am building a small high fire test kiln to 'play' around with some of these local materials...stay tuned ! SL

  • I simply can not imagine trying to do that in California, usa.

None of the professor's have been able to tell me what to look for to be able to do this, thier reply is call the supplier.

    Pathetic huh.

    warpig-

  • Hi - ok so you are in California . similar maybe to our coutryside in some way. But you are right we are too spoon fed aren't we - lets get a bit more adventurous & look for our own materials because its a lot easier than you think once you know what to look for.

    ( I am still learning !) SL - stay tuned !

  • Old huh? well... 52ish is pretty old! LOL...Simon...I have seen you swing the crowbar and the pick axe. I would venture to say your quite spry for an old guy! Keep it up...you had me fooled.

  • My teacher said that if you can bend a lump of clay around your finger it's good to throw. But if you can't? How do I condition it? Any books to recommend? Video? DVDs?

  • Why did it take me so long to go through all your videos? This is the kind of video I "dig" the most. My long term plan is to move to Costa Rica, live in a yoga retreat, and there I'll be the artisan, with my gift store. I'll be doing pottery, basketry, and what not with local materials, so I really need to learn how to choose clay, and all the minerals I may need.

  • Thanks Simon, It's great to see someone using materials from the source instead of from a store. I wouldn't know what to look for, but would love to find my own clay and use it! I too am in California as someone else, I think I could find it, but would be concerned with someone turning me in for "stealing" it or ruining the environment :)
