Actually this does make a lot of sense why more of the Lesser cats (the Servals and Lynxes) chased after it while the Greater cats (the lions and tigers) didn't. The laser is small and simulates prey the lesser cats eat (like mice and squirrels). For the Greater cats, that wouldn't even be considered a snack

Knowledge of physics isn't required to make a connection between an object and its effect. My cat knows exactly what the laser is and he knows enough to look around for that little red dot as soon as I pick it up. He's also figured out that when the red dot disappears, a little click can be heard as I release the button. Now when he hears that click he comes running over to me and starts pawing at my hand to get me to make the dot come back. They don't understand physics but they are not stupid.
