*In case some of you are wondering why I cue her to stop with the whip, it's to disengage her hind end. She wasn't good at yielding the hindquarters at the time

Thanks everyone that's viewed! And anyone wondering what "methods" I follow, I must say I do what works for me and the horse. But my type seems to be a dominantJohn Lyons/Clinton Anderson personality. Though I have a ton of mixed things that make my training unique-as does everyone else.

This was taken 7/18/09.

The first time I lunged Seven ( a couple weeks before) she really had no idea what was going on except run in circles at a trot. She did not know how to stop, and if you asked for a stop or canter, you got dragged. She also has some personal space issues.

Using calm assertiveness with leadership I taught her what I expected from lunging. Our horses know when you throw the lead at their hindquarters they stop. Tap, kiss, click, ask for walk or trot to get them going. If they resist, twirl at their eye with rope or whip lead.

You can see once Seven understood what I wanted she moved fast and did it. She is a very smart horse. Quarter x Arab, but not quite qualified for Quarab percentage I believe.

Our lunge lead seems to have disappeared so I used a regular walking halter lead rope.

I made sure when she did something right she got lots of praise. However, when she was disrespectful when invading space or head rubbing, she got a taste of boss mare. I gave her a chance to get away from me, but she insisted on continuing to run over me, so when I got the rope gathered I popped her with the leather end. When she head rubbed I hit her with my elbow in the face. That has got to be my ultimate pet peeve with horses next to walking away when mounting (which she also does) head rubbing and walking while mounting. Ask anyone, drives me insane! It is very dangerous for the handler/rider and only gets you lower in the herd ranking.

  • very nice! I like a little aggression you show there. My horse used to walk in to my space JUST like Seven. I had to put a shank on his nose whenever we would lead. He eventually caught on.

  • @BrookemarieA I don't like when horses crowd space. My training goes by the boss mare theory...you would never dare cross a boss mare that way! The most common problem I find with the horses I am training is disrespect with 1) no space respect and head rubbing and 2) refusing to move their feet because of lack of respect. I am happy to hear your horse has got it figured now! It is much more fun and safer for everyone when the horse understands you are his leader. Thanks for watching!

  • Lovit ! :D well done !

You'll having jumping cars in no time :P;)

  • Ah I think she'd make a great trick horse. Maybe we'll think about the car thing sometime ; )

  • I like the way you train. Thanks for sharing! =)

  • Thanks. Some people don't care for my training, and others love it. I just kind of do whatever works for me and that horse.

  • also dont go all the way to the ground, just lean to the side alittle then stand right back up. We arew trying to get out there this weekend.

  • I will try it, you have worked around her longer than I have. I turned the camera on so if I could keep note from video to see later on what she needs work on. Seven is quite the horse, she's a good girl.

  • Just try my time once next time dont film it just try it

  • She doesn't get hit by the lunge whip when I ask her to stop. You swing it near her butt. She stops. It's not going to freak her out or anything. Blue Boy and Manny are trained that way too.

Although the first time I lunged her she acted like may someone had struck her with a lunge whip harshly a few times.
