(youtube won't allow me to embed this video as part of a video score).

Fender Rhodes solo by Toby Smith from 'Mr Moon' from Jamiroquai's debut album 'Return Of The Space Cowboy'. The sophomore effort by Jamiroquai showcases Toby's incredible sounding suitcase Rhodes right from the opening of the album, which is a descending wholetone scale at the start of 'Just Another Story'. Mr Moon is just one of those songs where everything came together and it sounds fantastic - spacey chords, great lyrics, a killer bassline from Stuart Zender and an inspired solo from Toby on the Rhodes at the end. I've extended the outro (which is faded out on the album) by adapting what Toby typically played at gigs back then. I used to play this track with my band Acuphuncture (when it was still going), and we finished the song like this, cueing into the outro after the solo. I've got magical memories of playing this on my Rhodes at St John's College May Ball in Cambridge (June 2006) - it was 4am, the sun was just beginning to come up - there was a really light summery rain in the air but it was still warm, and everybody in the court was dancing to this...happy times :D Anyway, because the chords are fairly complex I've yet to see somebody transcribe or play this accurately - here on youtube, or anywhere else for that matter. The voicings in this video should all match the original recording, so hopefully it will be helpful for anybody who wants to play the keyboards for this.

This video was recorded:
Rhodes suitcase mk1 88 - Apogee Duet (direct from amp outputs) - Logic.

  • JUST AWSOME

  • @mauroquai

Thanks! Which other Jamiroquai songs would you like to see me do?!

  • I can't decide which one to get

    Yamaha PSR-E333 270$

    Thomann DP-25 420$

    Thomann SP-5100 520$

    Sorry for double post...

  • @Ormtast

Hi there, thanks for the message. Toby used a suitcase Rhodes on all the albums from Emergency up to his departure after Synkronised. So if you want to nail that sound, that's what you need. Having said that, you're unlikely to find a good one for $500 - so either save up, or go and try the keyboards you've mentioned in person. They'll all have an electric piano sound, and it's probably best you listen to it in person as you play, before you buy :D I hope that helps!

  • @tomogradymusic Thanks for the answer, btw I found that there are programs that emulate rhodes sound, one of them is called scarbee mark1 which costs like 100eur. So as I understand I can get thomann dp-25 or sp-5100, connect it to my pc via usb port, and have emulated rhodes sound ?

  • @Ormtast

Hi there, I would probably investigate destituteillusion's recommendation - I'm out of touch with emulators because I haven't had to use them (although I have heard the scarbee). Good luck!
