VR6 timing chain noise

@drichards1089 I believe I have spent about $500 for the entire parts (all chain guides, chain, clutch kit, coolant, etc). I did everything myself with some help from my buddy, so labor wasn't a part of cost. I heard that shop charges about $1,000, which isn't that bad considering how much work it involves (removal of transmission).

@JDMGUYTA22 Depending on the condition of yours, really. I have replaced both upper & lower guides, and of course the timing chain itself. The old Bentley Manual does not even have procedure for this job, but the latest edition has it, and it tells you everything you need. I recommend to buy one to begin with.

Man i just bought a mk3 jetta vr6 1998 and i got that same noise... can you tell me exactly what did you replace?

@AchtuningKorea hey how much does it cost to so the chains? mine need to be done thanks.
Did you solve the problem of that noise with replacing the chains?
Or was it anything else?

@BulletGolf Yes, the clicking noise from the engine was all gone after I replaced the timing chain and parts around it. When I initially discovered the noise, I was able to get away with it by bleeding the upper timing chain tensioner. You may want to try that, as it may save you from a thousand dollar job.

How much did it run you to have the timing chain replaced?

@slimcast932 Like I posted above, about $500 for the parts, including the OEM clutch kit, all the chain-related items (chain, guides, tensioner, etc), coolant, thermostat, etc. It's nice to do it at all once, which saves labor / time.
