Third album by the instru-metal band Pelican was released in 2007, on Hydra Head records.

City Of Echoes has everything you'd come to expect from a sludge / post rock / instrumental metal band and that may be the problem right there. It's predictable. There's no surprise twists and turns. Nothing at all unexpected was found on here.

Sure, the boys know how to play big ass riffs and write epic sounding build ups, but they only sound as though they could be epic without actually just BEING epic.

This is something that plagues the majority of this album, it pains me to say. Some songs manage to rise to brief levels of intrigue, but the rest fall flat.

I healthy dose of experimentation and perhaps some noisy distortion or just some plain old weird sound effects would have helped immensely. I think even a vocalist (GASP) would have contributed to a more fleshed out listening experience.

City Of Echoes sounds like it had some good ideas on the drawing board, but that's where the ideas stayed and never got the chance to be expanded upon.

I BREAKS MY HEART TO DO THIS, but I can only give this album a :

2/5

  • Australasia>S/T>FIOTWBTT>CIty Of Echoes

  • Have you heard anything of the new Pelican (2009) from Sounthern Lord? I read they printed the vinyl in gold.

  • check out , russian circles

  • I have 2 of their albums.

  • I just gave this another listen recently, and it is their weakest. The first 2 albums are a lot better, and their first EP is great as well.

  • They also had this cool little pink vinyl release called Pink Mammoth.

It was pretty good. It has just one song on each side and one is a Prefuse 73 remix.

  • I guess that Pelican is Instrumental Post-Doom Post-Sludge Post Rock Metal -simply.

  • iiiiiiiiii strongly disagree and have to say that this is my favourite album from them. (:

  • it wasn't THAT bad. compared to FIOTWBTT it wasnowhere near as extrordinary but it wasn't a complete failure. it just wasn't as "majestic" as FIOTWBTT.

  • This record is awful, their new drummer is fucking terrible.
