This two-bike electronically dropping motocross practice gate can be activated by the push of a button with a delayed dropping time. The dropping mechanism consists of an Allen Bradley PLC with a start and stop button and a light to signal to the riders that the gate has been activated. The light will stay on for 25 seconds, and then the gate will drop in 3-5 seconds. The dropping mechanism is enclosed in the toolbox and can all be removed by two nuts to protect the mechanical and electrical components from the elements. My friend's parents were getting sick of manually dropping the gate all the time, so I built him this for his practice track.

  • The most expensive part of the whole project was the Allen Bradley MicroLogix PLC which is worth around $499 new. I was able to purchase a used PLC off eBay for just under $100. A lot of the things I had lying around or they where just donated to me. It does not take much to design and build the actual gate, although a few hours were spent on the design and machining of the dropping mechanism. Since I did everything myself, I really don’t have much more than $150 into this project.
