This hauntingly beautiful aria by the Russian composer Vladimir Vavilov (1925-1973) was falsely attributed to Giulio Caccini after Vavilov's death. Even today it is sometimes presented as "Ave Maria by Caccini by Vavilov"! When Inessa Galante performed this song on her 1995 album "Debut" it gained worldwide fame and has since been used in several movies and recorded by artists as Sumi Jo and Andrea Bocelli. However, in my humble opinion, Galante's marvellous interpretation as heard here is unsurpassed. She is accompanied by Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alexander Vilumanis.

  • @guinulil i prefer the original Nadezhda Vainer version

  • Thank you!!!

  • In my opinion I thought Sumi Jo sung the most wonderful version of Ave Maria until I came across this video of Inessa Galante's rendition. It’s undoubtable the most haunting I have heard. I truly thank you for this upload otherwise I would never have the pleasure to hear it...

  • @franklindavid Because Vavilov is a believer in the Virgin Mary. It was so unfortunate for him that he is a Russian and during his time, Russia was under communism. Thus, he had to ascribe this work to a Renaissance composer, Giulio Caccini, to avoid being accused as a religious person which was a crime in a communist government.

  • I heard this for the first time today at the dry cleaner! I made her dig out her Zune to tell me what it was. She thought the recording was Maria Callas. It didn't sound like a Callas recording (quality too good), but the chills it delivers are the same. Came home and found this version. This is the one she had. I've listened to Sumi Jo's version . . no disrespect, but it doesn't begin to compare to this. This is exquisite.

  • Brava

  • Боже, яка краса!!!

  • The best version I've heard.
