great thanks much for posting. a friend of our family was a Airplane rebuilder. he rebuilt many crashed planes. he was a good friend of Steve Whitman. thats how i first heard of Steve. his father build Gliders. he was also flying in the 1930s.
The US Army Air Force dominated air racing in the 30s...till Steve Whitman came along. His hand-made inexpensive monoplanes whomped the best front line fighters of the day at the races. The Granville brothers and Matty Laird did their bit too but Whitman achieved winning speed with tiny engines and simple design.
