Dr. Kristy Nielson, chair and associate professor in the Department of Psychology, is on the cutting edge of understanding the neuroscience of aging and dementia. By using functional magnetic resonance imaging, Nielson studies what happens as the brain becomes less effective at recalling memories. She also studies the effect emotional events and other arousing situations have on memory-making at all stages in life. Nielson hopes her work will lead to a diagnostic test for people at risk of developing Alzheimers disease.
