What would happen if I just used the paint without using a medium?
-
if you are concerned with toxicity avoid using damar, cobalt and japan dryers. If you want to work with an artist grade oil paint consider m. graham artist oils ( the binder that they use is a walnut oil which is non toxic.
For mediums you might want to consider walnut alkyd medium and walnut oil (both non toxic)
You want to reduce (as much as possible) the smelly solvents.
there are non toxic brush clearners that you can use at the end of your paint session.

i come from an automotive background, i paint cars, motorcycles, and similar parts. can these oil based paints only be cut with weak solvents like mineral spirits or other oils? or can lacquer thinner or harsher solvents be used?

What a lot of faffing for a beginner - I would say you need
Canvas - or something else to paint on
Brush(es) - or something else to paint with
Thinners - white spirits or something like that
Pallet - old plate can be very useful
Off you go!

@phiacido Not always. You can find them very cheap some places.

1. Canvas
2. Jesso
3. Pigment/paint
4. Pallet
5. Brushes (Bristol)..flat, round, filbert)(Sable)..watercolor brushes)
Medium...coco, alkaline, basic medium suggestion:50/50 linseed oil/damar varnish and then add colbalt drier or Japan drier
Thumbs up if this is easy to copy and paste.
