Investigators on Wednesday released surveillance video of a deadly robbery at a north Harris County Texaco station in Houston.

Store clerk Salvador Maya, 20, was gunned down by a masked robber at the store, located in the 15300 block of Ella at Airtex, around 3:45 a.m. on May 16.

In the video, the robber is seen approaching Maya, who was behind the counter, and threatening him with a gun.

Though investigators said Maya complied with all of the robber's demands, the suspect opened fire anyway, killing the young clerk.

In the video, the suspect is seen hastily climbing over the counter, rummaging around for a moment and fleeing the scene on foot with a handful of cash.

Maya's family members appeared at a Harris County Sheriff's Office press conference Wednesday morning, asking for help bringing their loved one's killer to justice.

Maria Maya, Salvador's sister, said her brother was an intelligent man who never caused any trouble and dreamed of one day owning his own business.

"He was never involved in drugs. He would never drink -- sometimes I even used to invite him to clubs with my friends, but he preferred to stay at home with his computer. And he was super smart," she said.

Investigators believe Salvador Maya may have recognized the robber, and that's why he was -- in the words of Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia -- "murderously gunned down."

The Texaco station where Maya worked had been a trouble spot for crime in the past. Some customers said they thought the gaming machines in the store attracted a criminal element.

Deputies said they've already written 21 offense reports for the Texaco this year, and they've had four times as many calls for service there.

Maria Maya said her brother was aware of the danger, but he wanted to be there so he could make money and help his family. Through tears, she said she wished she could have been more like him.

The suspect is described as having a stocky build and standing 5 feet, 10 inches to 6 feet tall.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the HCSO Homicide Unit at 713-967-5810.
