Redesign and Interior design classes done through distance education help you become a professional decorator. This tutorial introduces the basics of planning your furniture layout and presenting these design options to your clients. If you have any concerns about the technical aspects of your design, it's always best to call on an expert. I'm not going to pretend that I know everything about lighting, everything about load bearing walls, or fireplaces. I'm going to call on my professionals to help guide me along the way and make sure that I'm going something safely for my client. In this case it's the fireplace in the living room. I need to call in Danielle who is a professional in this area and he's going to help me to determine what can and cannot be done safely for my clients and that way we can determine what the final design will be. This is the fireplace I was telling you about; considering they didn't want to do a formal room in here I didn't find it suited what they wanted to do. I wanted to look at the different options and then I would know better how I can set this room up, so expense wise or if it's even possible I just want to see what we can do here. What did you have in mind? Well my one thought was the a symmetrical thing is bugging me a little bit, one option was to see if we could actually take that part out and just have this because it is centered in the room, which feels more formal and centered and then cover this. The other possibility was to remove this and another is to remove the whole thing, I just want to see what we can do. Removing the whole thing, it is a big concrete structure, starts from the basement and goes all the way up to the chimney, you remove any part of it you have to think of the structural part of it. It would be a fairly big expense to move the whole thing. It can be done but it is very expensive. If you do you're going to have to consider what you are going to do about the flooring. Your hardwood floor is affected your ceiling is affected, and the roof is also affected. Moving part of it is the same thing, there is not a big difference in moving half or it or the whole thing, and it is still going to be relatively expensive. I would say the best thing to do is to cover it; it is easy to do, much less expensive. I am thinking of space wise too, to gain this space here. Can this part be taken out even? That can be taken out relatively easy, it does not support anything, you can take it down to the floor level then put down tile in its place. Another thought I had was if we can take this out of here and this becomes thirteen inches taller. The fireplace would not be useable anymore because you do not have a sill for anything that falls out, something can still fall out on the floor and fall onto the carpet. Unless we put tile here, that would be good of course. If you went with gas I would see no problems moving that. Other aesthetics we would have to deal with is we going to put a mantel. If you went with a marble mantel you have something solid to fasten it to. What I've done before in the past is I've covered it with drywall; you would put granite top on this if you wanted. I have thought of that, but I like the idea of having some space here. You are right about that, maybe facing this with a nice tile. The wood fireplace is not something they like to use very often at all, even changing this into a gas insert. Gas insert is easily done, look at the gas line underneath its actually running right across the side here and I believe that if we wanted to go with gas, we can go up through the floor and across the back, there are a few electrical considerations but it is fairly easy. That really helps; it will help me figure some things out. Before making large changes in a room or deciding about a final idea for a room, it's always best to touch base with your client, don't place that big order for marble for the fireplace when in speaking with them they can't really afford the marble, you have to sit down, talk with them, explain what you want to do and make sure that their comfortable with everything so their happy with the change and what the room is going to be in the end.
