@dizzygirl For all cock-a-teedle lubbers out there, if you have a "normal gray" & several other color patterns too, males have bright yellow faces & cheek patches & they have single color tail feathers, whereas the females will have duller colored faces & what is known as a "barred" tail, the "bars" are kinda' like stripes. I've been breeding them for 25 years & think they're the "court jesters" of the animal kingdom. Head skrtiches to baby for the performance!

my first budgie was a he and i named him putte.. she layed eggs with her male partner later on.. /facepalm. so she did get named putta instead. she was hand tamed by me after she got stuck in a flypaper :). i did remove it so it did not hurt and after that she never left my side ^^. she did even let me kiss her and hold her between my lips as if she was a hotdog lol. i thought her tricks to jump on my fingers ^^. i never did bite her no worries :P

@dizzygirl Easiest way to find out is look at the bottom of the tail, if it's a solid color, then it's a boy...if it's speckled, then it's a girl.
When we bought the bird, we were told it was a girl. We've called him a "her" for so long that that's all she knows. So we just keep calling her a she, even though we KNOW she's a he now.
