Actually, he was real, you can check in all Jazz' dictionnaries. He didn't record that much, but you can still find some of his 78" records. Maybe Woody Allen didn't know about him, it could be a coincidence, or maybe he choose a random name in a jazz dictionnary...?

This movie is really genius I think. Sean Penn nails the character of the narcisistic Emmet Ray. And the girl who played the mute (sorry can't remember her name) was great. Felt so sorry for her at the end. So sweet. Woody Allen did a great job of directing this. But no, Emmett was not a realy guitar player. Just a character.
