http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1017910 This video describes how to access Tech Support Mode in VMware ESXi 4.1. Tech Support Mode provides a command-line interface that can be used by the administrator to troubleshoot ESXi. You can enable Local Tech Support Mode, which means you access it directly on the ESXi console. You can also enable Remote Tech Support Mode, which you access it through an SSH session.

  • good to see that this option has now found its way in the VI-Client/vSphere4 Client. It was always a bit of a struggle back in the VI 3 days to support customers that were using ESXi. This has improved a lot in the new ESXi 4. Looks like this is going to be the only option in future releases and the classic Service Console architecture will become legacy. I better get used to it now and start learning the remote CLI tools.
