I'm just about to upgrade to a Canon DSLR and it comes with the standard 18-55mm lens. I'm planning on doing portraits and wasn't sure which lens to upgrade to, if any for those kinds of shots. Great video and you've helped me to decide to get a 50mm. Thanks for clarifying it for me. Awesome video's man, you make the technical side of photography make sense. Cheers

@markclarisse01 the sigma 17-50 f2.8 would let in more light and the optics would be slightly better, plus it has VR/IS - other than that, the lenses you will be using are fine. if you don't find yourself needing more light / shorter shutter speed then just stick with the lens you already have (unless you have tons of money to spend)

i have a nikon d3100 with the standard 18-55 lens. I was planning on selling that one to buy the 18-200, is that a good idea? Also i dont understand the 50mm lens, dont the other lenses have 50mm within them (18-55mm < over 50). what makes the 50mm so special? Cause cant i just set my other lens at 50mm at take portrait photography. (ive been obsessed with bokeh shots but the subject always gets blurred out along with the lights and my aperture only goes up to 5.6 :( . any suggestions? ).Thanks!

@shrillionaire 50mm is better for the 1.8 aperture and the sharpest optics possible. 18-55 is better for range.

@PhotoExtremist yes that is correct: prime lenses = best possible quality.
the 18-55 does of course have 50mm in its range, but what it does not have is the f1.8 or f1.4 aperture, which is useful for low light situations, and bokeh.

Hi, I'm confused! The camera has its own aperture setting and the lens has its own - is that true?? Please explain.

@iVideoGuru you can adjust the aperture on a digital camera if you are using a modern digital lens. if you are using an old analog lens, you will need to set it manually on the lens itself. Sometimes the lens has both digital and manual control (like the 50mm 1.8)
