I find that very interesting, and I think we need to revisit Deaf-Mute discussion. What does it apply to us as Deaf people? Should we call ourselves Deaf-Mutes? Come and discuss with us...

  • Yep, ME DEAF-MUTE & ME PROUD! :-)

I remember this good debate back in early 2007. Discussing possible theory that you also mentioned about possible reason for dropping the "Mute" from "Deaf-Mute" based on historical happenstances, this possible theory makes a lot sense. I already embraced this term when it was brought up in 2007.

    Good revisit of this topic!

  • @falzTV Yes I agree with you. Something we need to discuss that is very dear to our heart. We cannot ignore Deafmute at all... we need to embrace it in our own way. I am not sure if you arleady watch Ella's vlog about Deafmute in 2007 something like that.

  • @deafchipmunk - Yup, I saw that video, plus many others' videos of both viewpoints (embrace and oppose). Good debate at that time.

  • @falzTV COOL! It is always great to chat with you!

  • Yes we are because we dont use our voices meanwhile we sign ASL. I dont see anything wrong for us being Deaf Mute. However it turned out negative by hearing supremacists for the wrong reason.

  • @DeafSweetMind Yes I agree with you.. there is nothing wrong with Deafmute because Deafmute is very much part of my life as well as yours and many others who preserve and carry our language, ASL. Without Deafmutes, ASL will not survive or will be badly abused.

  • Interesting to think about the transformation of our identity through our name -- from DEAF-MUTE to DEAF to now, more and more accept "Hearing Impaired". Eliminating Deafness through technology and words!

  • @bearpax52 Hi there, thanks for the info. Really appreciated that very much!

  • @kalalau52 1850s - Amos Kendall donates land to establish a school for the deaf and the blind (Columbia Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb and the Blind )

1864 - President Lincoln signs the bill to authorize the school to grant college degrees. New name: National College for the Deaf and Dumb.

  • "Mute" was deleted since infiltration of AGB, in Miner Gallaudet's Combined Method !!
