I'm not sure if I like Buckeye Burl as a single cut wood. Maybe as a top piece with walnut as the body, I'm not sure.

Practice I suppose. My first one or two weren't that easy to play. Over time I learned what I needed to change to make them easier to play. Lower action, level frets, good quality parts, etc...
It also helps to have a good musician playing them. Any good musician can make my basses sound great, but I can't make any bass sound great when I play.
