My 10-year old daughter Helen attends her first alpaca birth. I go in the house to call the owner of the laboring alpaca and Helen films the whole thing. The baby and dam were both fine (dam had a tiny tear from the big baby). The owner really really wanted a little girl cria (baby alpaca) or at least a black boy and this one was a light fawn boy. She had a light fawn boy out of a black sire and this dam last year too (named Bevan). Hence my reaction upon discovering it's a boy. Oh well maybe next year she will get her black girl cria. This little boy dried off and looks really nice! She named him Finbar (pale warrior). I think Helen's commentary is priceless!

  • She was already tearing, cria stuck at the shoulders. Ive attended a camelid neonatal wet lab, and am trained to know when you should intervene. Ive attended countless camelid repo conferences. Ive attended 70+ births alpacas/sheep and dont interfere unnecessarily, helped in 5 here. She would have torn worse if I didn't wiggle the baby out and likely rolled on his neck too. I had my vet review this clip and she felt the intervention was warranted.

  • He was stuck at the elbows and the mom was tearing when I looked so I do think it was appropriate to help him out a little. You are right can't tell the fleece is nice at birth but Helen is always hopeful. As it turns his fleece is nice. Owner was hoping for black (both parents are black), not sure what color he is he has gray points face and legs but fiber in his blanket looks fawn. Never seen one like him. He and mom are both doing well. He's attending his first show this spring.
