The Shajo-geri is a kick, typical for the style of Genseiryu Karate.

  • ...and the nomination for most useless karate kick goes to......

  • @plowenson Karate is all about self defense.despite ground, standing or air..what would u do if ur opponent sweeps u & put u down? this particular kick is useful when ur being swept & unbalanced ur self.u can apply this simultaneously if u go down..because nobody can predict a fight & promise the position in a real combat..

  • Alot of karate is training to develop your technique without a partner. The monks trained on their own for hours without talking to anyone (kung fu/karate call it what you will). Some daft techniques clearly got through! Its not meant to be taken so literally. This video makes a mockery of traditional martial arts!

  • Ok, you hit your opponent with a soft kick and them? You are grounded, backsided to the other fighter with your face down. He can easily aply a stomp in the backside of your head. Not good.

  • ...I guess if you had enough leg power to break a rib : /

  • @Lordasia Karate teaching is based on abstract methods. This is just a drill that is used to introduce the kick to the student in a Shotokan kihon kumite way... It´s up to the student to use it this way, or when he's falling or when he's already on the ground... Karate teaching doesn't go into every possible situation were each tecknique can be applied... Although there is Embu studie where each gives wings to he's imagination...

  • @Lordasia yeah..this is Gensei ryu...

  • @MrSamurai85 I trained Shotokan and Kyokushin in Japan for 9 yrs and was never taught that you do this kick when swept to the floor. You throw yourself to the ground, as seen in the UNSU kata. I have never seen a Japanese bunkai where this is taught in response to a sweep, at least not in Shotokan.

  • @plowenson when we practice this in Japan,we were taught this is applied specially when we are being swept or over balanced during a combat.but when we practice this kick we cannot ask some 1 to sweep all the time knw? this is not just throwing our self to the floor..assuming that I'm being swept...for further info visit Gensei ryu butokukai official web site..

  • In Karate, we have enough to worry about grapplers trying to get us to the ground, and your first move is...what?

  • @MrSamurai85 I know that karate is all about self defense, I train karate myself (WIKF).. But the karateka throws himself on the floor, without being sweeped.. if you're on the floor you're more vulnerable to further attacks. what I'm saying is: it's not self defense to throw yourself on the floor in front of your opponent.. it's just stupid..

If you already were on the floor, it's a different story and that's not what this video is about..
