  • No problem at all. Your mechanic is right - reving a road engine in neutral is not very heathy. the difference is that the clearences of the internal componants on your GSX engine are bigger to cope with cold (i.e. -10C) starting and overheat (110C). With an F1 engine the operating band is so much smaller (60C to 110C) to alow for much smaller clearences. Jou can only just turn the engine over at room temperature because of this.

  • ParameterF1, I read your writeup at gurneyflap. What an amazing site to see this car restored to a better than new condition.

Just out of interest are you able to say with any accuracy what the pedal travel is of the accelerator, cluth and brake pedals?

  • I've not measured the travel but I guess the throttle is about 3 inches, clutch is about 2 inches and brake about an inch if you are measuring (guessing) from the foot pad.

  • gold333, The startup regime is carfully thought out. The engine is not started from cold, the pipes you seen fitted in this video are for preheating the engine, water and oil. The engine is started at 60 degrees C. When started the revs are held at about 4000rpm until the engine reaches 70 degrees C as the altenator does not work below this rpm. The only way to get enough teperature into the engine to run on a track is to rev it. I hope this explaines.

  • It's like starting up the space shuttle.

  • Newey was on his way with this team to win races but there was no money. He said that with Red Bull he now finished what he wanted to achieve with Leyton House. Leading a team from almost zero to victory!

  • what a beauty!

  • Interesting & intricate start up vid.... I always liked the sound & look of the illmor powered LH... but thats just me

  • Thanks for the great reply.

My bike mechanic says it is bad to rev my GSXR engine (0.75L, 170hp) in neutral as the engine is designed to rev when under load. (i.e. pulling in gear).

He says this stresses the engine in ways it isn't designed to handle.

Is this also valid for these 3.5L, 700hp F1 engines?

  • Can someone explain to me why all these performance mechanics always do this strange barking revving in neutral on a cold engine?
