Interviewing a family member to learn more family history? Want to find out who those people are in old photos or photo albums? A photo album is a great way to get information-- the photos themselves help jog the memory.

In order to make a very useful recording, though, you need to identify what you and the interviewee both know as you sit together with the photo album. Identify the page you're on, the photo you're looking at, and the features in the photo you're referring to when you make the recording.

This video -- where I, Susan Kitchens, talk to my mother as we look through her aunt's photo album (dating from 1915 or so when Great Aunt Doris went to school at the Fenway School of Illustration) lets you experience what it's like when features are not identifies and when they are. Plus, Great Aunt Doris was a painter and a horsewoman, so there's plenty of vintage eye candy to go along with the how-to interviewing lesson.

This video was made for a 2-part series, "Interviewing While Looking At Photo Albums" at Family Oral History Using Digital Tools http://familyoralhistory.us/
