Released in 2010 on Flying Nun Records.

Die! Die! Die! is one of those noisy mid fi, rock / pop / punk bands. They have been around since 2003. They're from New Zealand. This is their 3rd album.

You should know the drill by now and know what to expect when you read the words noisy and pop in the same sentence. Loud, guitar driven, uptempo, catchy songs about malaise, restlessness and love. Reverb, distortion, energy. The usual suspects.

These guys do tweak the formula a bit though. They add a little color, a little shimmer, a little shoegaze. And it sounds very pretty at times. It turns the otherwise aggressive sound of their music into something more vibrant. And that's cool.

All the songs follow the same pattern and formula. The songs all have the same idea and aesthetic, and it doesn't totally hinder the enjoyability. These guys are able to switch the loud / quiet parts enough to keep the album somewhat engaging.

So, even though the idea and sound isn't anywhere original, it's music we've all been hearing a lot of but with a slight twist and it works. I enjoyed this enough and didn't think these guys were just some coat tail riders. They pushed this tired sound into a more colourful direction, rearranged the formula enough from song to song to keep it interesting. As always, could have used more variety in their sonic template, but that's just me.

For fans of Male Bonding, Dead C, No Age, At The Drive In.

3.1 / 5

  • noise gaze pop?

  • @Thismeaningtoitall Shiny mid fi fuzz rock? Loud rainbow punk pop?

  • see these guys live heaps..they rule! great review.

  • @cyanidebreathmintz Yeah, I read that their live shows are crazy. I'd totally catch them live if I could. They even said that they're more of a live band than a studio band.

  • Not enough death. But I'll check it out anyway.

  • @SushiGoat Let me know what you think if you do.

  • Did you died forever?

  • Steve Albini recorded their first album, so this album is a radical change from their first.

  • Oh boy, travel to see them live. Even in a shitty, poorly attended venue they manage to explode with energy. 'Form' is very different to their other albums. They mellowed out a lot....the name DieDieDie is much more appropriate for their earlier stuff! I've encountered a few sullen punks who are disappointed at the softness of this album, but it's much more seething live. I like your review even though I personally give this album a million stars out of ten. :)

  • Hey, new subscriber, I saw your "Eating Us" By: Black Moth Super Rainbow review. If you liked them, can you please do a review on any albums by a band called Caribou? They are Canadian and have just been nominated for 2 Juno awards.

  • do some reviews of there earlier stuff please

  • there fucking amazing live

  • I think that Jay Reatard's name is just pronounced as REtard.

  • Noise post-gaze pop. Fucking hipsters, how do they work. lol

  • Dislexia is a bitch.

This review was mellifluous as hell.
