In 2007 the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) http://www.DBSAlliance.org unveiled phase one of an innovative two-part national campaign, "Facing Us:" http://www.FacingUs.org an initiative focused on eliminating stigma surrounding mental illness—by showing the world the real face of depression and bipolar disorder as the treatable, medical illnesses they are—and providing tools and resources for those diagnosed to create a better future. Phase one of the campaign launched a video and art contest for individuals living with the illness and a PSA contest for film students or production studios. The contests solicit personal video stories, artwork and public service announcements (PSAs).
As DBSA President Sue Bergeson said, "According to researchers, the only thing that seems to put a dent in the stigma attached to mental illness is not education ... not shame and blame ... but instead, putting a real face on the illness."
