Up in Smoke: How the Tobacco Industry Shaped the New Smoking Bill

President Obama signed into law a bill last week that gives the US government broad regulatory power over cigarettes and other tobacco products. Obama said the law would curb the ability of tobacco companies to market their products to children. But several public health professionals have come out strongly against the new legislation. They argue that it was largely shaped by Philip Morris, now called Altria Group, the largest cigarette company in the country. We speak with Dr. Joel Nitzkin, chair of the Tobacco Control Task Force of the American Association of Public Health Physicians.

  • i THOUGHT OBAMA WAS DIFFERENT , but it appears he is just as bought off as the non representative represntatives that passed this POS bill.

  • I'll take a wild guess here:

If hemp smoke does not cause cancer, its probably due to the frequency at which it is smoked. When i used to smoke (cigarettes) i could go through a pack a day , i doubt i could have done the same with joints ... for obvious reasons.

I'll take an other wild guess here:

All smoke , if inhaled in enough quantity will cause cancer, because our pulmonary system isn't efficient at processing that type of particulate matter.

  • what,,, ok, im a highschool student, the tobacco industry isnt advertising to us, how could they, there not aloud on tv, and the ads in magazine are covered in warning labels, highschoolers still use tobacco products, put on big warning labels, take away flavoring, tobacco will be around in highschool for atleast 5 more years. just let people smoke...

  • I'm a free person with a free mind I don't need you to protect me Obama.

Obama getting his payday. Next paydays.....health care industry, car companies, military industrial complex.

  • Sorry. Didn't mean to give you a thumbs down. I clicked the wrong one in a truly dyslexic fashion.

  • I guess the point of the video is to show how Obama's legislation will not stop companies from attracting new people to smoking, or make it any safer because it is an inherently dangerous habit. So is the implication here that we should just ban cigarettes altogether? Or is this yet another example of pointless regulation and wasteful spending? Since a ban would cause insurrection, I think the only solution here is to NOT regulate big tobacco. People will never quit and at least we'd save money.

  • smoke 30 joints a day and you'll never get cancer.

    Capisci?

  • Sure it does.....unfortunately the data is skewed...The AMOUNT OF SMOKE from 1 or 2 joints a day CANNOT be compared to the AMOUNT OF SMOKE from 30 cigarrettes a day. If you were to compare a 30 joint a day smoker to a 30 cigarrette a day smoker you would get the same result (cancer-wise)because now you have the same AMOUNT OF SMOKE to compare.

    APPLES TO APPLES...CAPISCI???

  • the government has more propaganda out than the cigarette company's do!!!!!1
