The IEEE Computer Society presented its 2011 Computer Entrepreneur Award to Diane Greene and Mendel Rosenblum for creating a virtualization platform that profoundly revolutionized modern computing infrastructure. The Computer Entrepreneur Award honors the technical and entrepreneurial leaders who are responsible for the growth of the computer industry. Ms. Greene accepted their award at the Computer Society's 25 May 2011 awards ceremony in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
In the mid-1990s, they began working together, focusing their efforts and combined expertise on the development of a virtualization strategy. Their work culminated in the 1998 formation of VMware, a company founded with the purpose of designing virtualization solutions for x86 desktops. Greene and Rosenblum expanded their original development, launching a series of pioneering products. This pairing soon produced a powerful and elegant virtualization platform for x86 servers that has revolutionized the datacenter and changed the way IT infrastructure is built and managed.
