So a few months ago or so, one of my peers from the channel I hang out on suggested I do some non-Fire Emblem sprites (i.e. stuff other than what I recorded thus far) and I did promise myself that I'd do it eventually (which I did.) Now I have a recording of it to change things up!

After seeing the concept trailer for a new Mortal Kombat movie, I was filled was nostalgia, as there was a Mortal Kombat 2 cabinet at the arcade I frequented as a child. One of the things I didn't like about the series though is how they cheaped their way out in the graphics by recording stunt actors for their sprites, especially since it was sloppy and uninspired, so I decided to render the characters from Mortal Kombat 2 into a style I enjoyed, namely the Street Fighter Alpha series!

Now for some commentary on the video. I used official SFA sprites for size reference, since I wanted to match the style as closely as possible, and I specifically picked the characters you see in the video for various reasons (muscle, clothing and color references.) In particular, the character I picked (Liu Kang) was inspired by Bruce Lee, and Fei Long from the Street Fighter series was also based off Bruce Lee, so I included him as well.

Anyway, as usual I'm experimenting with approaches to spriting, and this one is effective. Basically I start with a single tone and outline the shape, then I add details, starting from rougher to finer. It's pretty useful, as it forces me to work on the sprite as a whole, and thus I can catch most anatomical errors before they become too difficult to fix (which was a problem in a previous unrecorded work.) The only real problem is being the perfectionist I am, the early stages are very cringeworthy.

Overall, there's a lot of room for improvement when it comes to matching the SFA style, and I'll probably return to this in a month or so with a fresh perspective and more experience. A few things that popped out include understanding how they outline various details, and the SFA style really emphasizes exaggeration, since the Liu Kang sprite is very skinny compared to even Ryu. The height is fine though, so it's probably closer to the Capcom vs. SNK style (which I'll have to compare to at some point.) Look forward to more possible recordings of the MK2 cast!

(I forgot to shade his far wristband at the end of the video, oops!)
