The Orono Police Department announced this morning that at least three graves in the northeast area of Union Cemetery in Long Lake have been vandalized.
The vandalism was discovered earlier this week after Long Lake resident Thomas Turnham reported that the grave marker was stolen from his father, Richard's grave.
Turnham said this morning that a friend noticed during Memorial Day ceremonies that the marker was gone, but he didn't report it right away because he was deciding what to do about it. When he found out that the Veterans Administration would replace it if there was a police report, he decided to report it.
When officers went to the cemetery to investigate, they found that not only was the marker gone, but three other headstones had been intentionally pushed over.
Jessica Werder at the Orono Police Department said that no other grave markers had been stolen, but added that the three headstones had been knocked over recently and the department is investigating it.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Orono Police Department at 952-249-4700.
