A scheme is applied in London to get as much edible food that would "go off" during the Christmas break and be sent to landfill, instead be given to homeless charities so they can give it away to those that need the food. After all, not all "Best before" dates mean you cna't use it, most is that you are not allowed to sell it after that date.
Recorded from BBC London News, 21 December 2011.
Finally, one step towards ending world hunger!

We've been doing this in the States for years.
Super markets pull food off the shelves BEFORE the expiration dates, because it's unsellable one the food gets close to the date.
Ex; Nobody will buy milk with an expiration date of 48 hrs from purchase.
Nothing wrong with the milk, just not worth paying for.
