As a tuba player, I disagree. Any instrument can play jazz. And PERSON can play it. The tuba is not necessarily known for jazz, but when you play it (as you see here) it's unheard of but it sounds beautiful.
Awesome playing, I envy you :-)

Simply great Tuba improv. Incredibly tasteful.

@meepdog2 Methinks the tuba sounds lovely in the upper tessitura. Joe has great chops in all registers and is a heck of a musician all the way around.
You're too accustomed to the "American" tuba sound you hear in band or in large orchestral pieces. In a lot of other parts of the world the f or the e flat is the most common instrument and CC or BBb is only played when more weight is needed. Lots of ways to play tuba and sound great...

@BetterThanAThesis that same thing happened to me this year:(((( its just not right!

Love it
Very good tuba player

This is badass. I wish my band instructor would let me play tuba in jazz band. I'm stuck playing bass trombone...which is okay. But I love playing tuba, and I don't love playing trombone.

That is indeed an F Tuba!

pretty sure it's a B flat. Mine is kind of like that. not sure excatly
hey Joe, some friends of mine know you memphis sound and they convinced me to buy a LOUD mouthpiece and it's by far the best mouthpiece i've ever owned. I play bass trombone and I got a lot of crap from people telling me it was too big of a mouthpiece at allstate at least until i got first chair and sent them home crying. you're great the mouthpieces are great, and I'm a fan.

How does he, or anyone for that matter, keep their rotary valves from rattling?
WACVet71 3 years ago
SuperSlick makes great rotary valve oil. It's clear in color, not the "yellow" colored oil. That, combined with a drop of synthetic piston valve oil, (I like Hetman's) makes the rotors quiet and fast. All the best! Joe
