The initial impulse was to mimic ocean waves moving up through a beach, but the mechanical action caused the sand to collect on one side. Abandoning this idea, it was found that staggering the direction of the 'circulators' created a different and more nuanced feeling. Rice was more interesting than sand. The title plays with 'Brownian Motion', the property of molecules in a liquid or gaseous state to always be moving about.
