Picnic at Hanging Rock is a 1975 Australian mystery film directed by Peter Weir, adapted from the novel of the same name.
It premiered at the Hindley Cinema Complex in Adelaide, South Australia on 8 August 1975. It became one of the first Australian films to reach an international audience, receiving international acclaim and commercial popularity, and thus has an important place in both cinematic and Australian history.
The film stars Helen Morse, Rachel Roberts and Vivean Gray.

St. Valentine's Day, 1900. On a beautiful summer's day a party of virginal Australian schoolgirls from an exclusive finishing school giddily prepare for an excursion to Hanging Rock, a magnificent natural monument drenched in a mysterious atmosphere.

The girls gain permission to explore the upper slopes of the rock. Edith takes a nap and wakes to discover that the other three girls have removed their shoes and stockings and have resumed their trek as if in a dream, disappearing into a passageway in the rock itself. What eerie events took place that day, and will those involved ever rid themselves of the demons that the ill fated picnic unearthed?

Based on the classic novel by Joan Lindsay, 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' is both sublimely spooky and majestically beautiful, boasting visually hypnotic photography by Oscar winner Russell Boyd, a haunting score by Bruce Smeaton and the timeless ethereal beauty of Anne Louise Lambert as Miranda, this classic helped revive the Australian film industry and established Director Peter Weir as a major international talent.

No it is not. The idea may have come from the disappearance and further finding of a girl lost in the hills but it is a long shot to say "based on a True story". Thanks for comment.

IT IS NOT A TRUE STORY. If you research you will find the story first came from a fictional book.

OK, here's the research: in 1867 three small children wandered off into the bush around Daylesford. They died of exposure and were found days later. This tragedy was reported at the time - in fact, a memorial was erected to them - as was reported the 1907 nature excursion at HR. History is silent on the event in Joan Lindsay's marvellous story, which is even listed by Penguin books as "fiction". I'm afraid the burden of proof is on you to provide evidence to the contrary.

This is actually true but the real story behind it all is that the Hanging Rock is a sacred Aboriginal Rock that is only for men NOT WOMEN. The female who was left unconsious was left there alive as a warning to never go back to that rock again. I know this because I am Aboriginal and know about all sacred places and where these females went was a traditional mans place where they take place in walk about. Walk about is when young boys are to go through the tradition to prove they are real men.

To all those saying this is real, it's not (the dates are wrong). Not only that, the author's original ending was cut out of the book by publishers request to leave the mystery open. But it was published after her death. Look up 'The secret of hanging rock.' The girls were never found because according to the author they turned into crabs and went into a time warp. And I'm not even joking.

and everything is true on the internet. It is a fictional story. The author played on the true aspect to increase its mystery, just like its ending.

This isn't fictional. This is a true story. Look it up. This was always an open wound in Australia since young girls were involved. No trackers or dogs found a trace even until this day of high tech forensics.
