  • Hey, are most older (pre-96) VCR's able to copy DVD's w/o MV protection distorting the video? I had a JVC HR-J610U that I found was able to copy my boxset of Adventures of Super Mario 3 onto a VHS tape and no MV protection. Is this just a fluke in the design, or are pre-DVD VCR's just a lot less sensitive to copy protection?

  • @MRLOL785 Pre-1985. However, not all pre-recorded tapes have it.

I have those very VHS tapes and they do not have Macrovision on them at all.

  • @spatsbear2 I meant would they be able to copy a normal, store-bought DVD and record it onto a normal VHS tape without MV causing distortion?

  • @MRLOL785 Only if the VCR was from 1984 and earlier. They would be immune to it.

If you need to copy a protected DVD to VHS with a newer VHS VCR, they make video stabilizers that would remove the macrovision sync pulses. Sima makes one, and can usually be found on Ebay.

  • @spatsbear2 I had a JVC a while back (HR-J610U) from 94 that I was able to copy the boxset of Super Mario 3 without any trouble. I was wondering whether the old ones from the post MV (post 85 -97) are just less sensitive to all the copy circuitry.

  • @MRLOL785 No... those DVDs do not have any copy protection on them... I have those box sets myself, and I tried it on my one DVD+VHS combo and it copies no problem. If it had macrovision it wouldn't let me even record to VHS.

  • @spatsbear2 wow, I thought all DVD's had to have the copy protection by law.

  • I have the PAL version of this Beta and still works to this day and was amazed of the picture quality on a 46inch 200hz Bravia i think the beta will outlast the Bravia TV though Sometimes stereo sounds cut out, when tap machine it come good

  • It is called the hall effect caused by a tiny bit of glue on the head drum which has become conductive and needs to be removed

  • @WULFY1993 Or it could be a fuse that has blown. My Ferguson 3V45 (a re-badged JVC HRD-150) has faulty CPs (fuses) on the PSU (Power Supply Unit). This model was known for faulty CPs, as they were a stock fault, so I'd also check the CP's on the power supply. This one has just succombed to the head rum not rotating syndrome as well. Also, it switches on, but while the LED for the channel selector comes on, the red LED on the on/off button stays dormant.

you could just unplug it for a few hours
