Wrong question! What have modern interprets/conductors done to the original tempi of Beethoven. (Yes, there were methronome numbers written by Beethoven himsefl!) Most modern conductors ignore it. That's why you were so astonished by this tempo!

Well, i once loved Bernsteins version nearly as much as this one, but if you compare it, you can feel a deeper spirit in this performance. For me the most impressiv fact of furtwängler is that his performances are completely in contrast with the common performances of today. But nevertheless it is of course just a question of taste and i wouldnt doubt that bernstein and the others are great either.I simply prefer the pathetic performances of furtwängler.

  • @bierbaron6666 I have no doubt that Furtwangler was a great conductor, but I'm just not fond of these overly romanticised interpretations of Beethoven.

I like Bernstein for a modern performance of the third and Savall for the HIP approach.

It is supposed to be like that, but furtwängler always made great interpretations of the classic music.Thats reason why he is apart from all the others. He lived the music and hated the heartless kind of perfektion which is nowadays standard.Nobody comes even close to the great talented furtwängler!!!

  • Beethoven was by no means a weakling.

  • @CuriosityRoads It's supposed to be "eroica"!! Is this not allegro? It is slower than usual but that brings out more the "heroic" quality in this music. But compare to David Zinman - now THAT'S "Ughhh"

  • @CuriosityRoads I love the San Francisco Symphony Version, Conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas.

  • Ugh, what the hell has Furtwangler done to the tempo? Sounds like a dirge. It's supposed to be "allegro con brio" for god sake! Listen to the Savall version for a proper performance of this piece.

  • on yersell Ludwig....this is symphonic composition at its very best...I pity those who have to comment but cant get into the guts of the music...this is his best!!
