  • Otaku3, you do us all a great service. You obviously love jazz very much. There's too little around today. Such a loss.

  • I worshiped at the Kenton/Christy altar during the 40's and 50's and am still convinced that this band, along with Herman's second and third herd, were the finest big bands of them all.

  • Thanks for your comment, boguseconomist-san!!

  • kenton my first entry into big band jazz.

  • my dad he told me :D

  • Kenton had great vision in choose his alto saxophonists, all of whom became great after playing with Kenton, including young Art Pepper, who is sublime here. You'll never hear such a smooth West Coast sound, so pure and original, no matter where you look.

  • The great Art Pepper would've needed more space, but as this is a big-band arrangement of Stan the Top Dog, we have to hear all the sax section pastels and further orchestra drip.

  • Stan was the pioneer of modern big band jazz. He took jazz by the scruff of the neck and made it grow up.

  • @teazle2 Thanks. I didn't know about the ears. I was working for an ice show and followed the Kenton band when they were doing split weeks. I knew Shelley Mann and he helped get me in to concerts, since I was usually broke. As to Anita O"day, I agree she was fine, but to me, Ella was the top.

  • Me too bogus economist. I love that rich booming brass sound of Kenton. Christy was indeed great BUT Anita O Day for me outshines her ( see Jazz on a summers day when she was at her 12 o click !!) But the big band era was wonderful Don't forget Dorsey's though, thats where Sinatra grew up !! ( Did you know that Kenton pushed and pushed to get a deeper better louder brass section and after achieving it to his satisfaction discovered his ears were waxed up which was why he pushed so hard !!)
