Here is some very rare, and utterly hysterical newsreel footage of Max Baer and Tony Galento as they "train" for their July 2, 1940 bout at Roosevelt Stadium in New Jersey. The winner would become the #1 contender for Joe Louis' title.

Video of several rounds from this fight, along with the historical background leading up to the bout can be found on my site.

  • Wonderful! I lived half mile from Madam Bey's training camp. We saw so many greats around town. Floyd Paterson in church, King Lavinsky being driven in his new Caddy with his feet out the window, Emil Griffith, Dick Tiger, Schmeling liked to spar with my cousin Johnny Krieger cause he spoke German also, Braddock, Canzoneri.

  • Wow ! Sounds like you should submit a magazine article, what terrific stories you have to share ! I've always wanted to research and write about King and his sister Leapin' Lena, such characters !

  • Your footage just made my day!!

  • And your comment made mine, thanks !

  • A great big thanks for posting this one, Maxiesgal. A real gem of footage.

  • My pleasure Methos ! The scene where he goes apesh*t during training and of course mimicking Galento are priceless !

  • @djk28161: He lasted eight rounds with a rather big gash in his face that he got on fight night from a bar brawl mere hours before the bout started. Most in his place would have done a no-show. Unlike Blubberbean who can't swing it for more than 3-4 rounds, Galento had a stamina that belied his barrel of a physique. Yes, he preferred to end it early, like all brawlers do.

  • @djk28161 : The funniest part is, disrespect him all you like, Galento never claimed to be a 'boxer'. He had no time for training, technique or the sweet science. The ring was his battlefield and he'd use every dirty trick in the book; he himself wasn't shy to admit it. After losing a bout to Joe Louis, whom he managed to put down for a few seconds, he actually lamented not fighting his "usual fight" and fouling Louis. But the man had that one thing no gym can teach: heart.

  • @tftmc : In this particular fight, Galento had received a severe cut to the lip from a baw brawl, mere hours before the bout. He got it stitched and showed up for the fight anyway. So Baer had an easy time opening that cut up and making Tony swallow blood all night. To Galento's credit, he managed to last eight rounds in spite of this. Anybody else, especially among the current crop of 'boxers' (note the quotes) wouldn't show up if they had a mere cold.

  • @pugilistofpower : Butterbean wouldn't last 2 minutes against "Two Ton" Tony. Maybe the adverts could take something away from that.... you know sorta have some wordplay that prophesies about something like that.

  • @pugilistofpower They're both laughing stocks not true boxers just trailer trash that swings wildly and use their blubber to try to bully others,....max fuckin humiliated this fat peice of shit No chip on Tony's shoulder...cuz if there was he wiould pull it off dunk it in guacamole and eat it

  • Funny vid, great to watch Baer he was a natural entertainer. But as an added note, Galento always cut so easy, and Baer happened to cut other fighters easy.

And in that " Battle of the 'Bums' " Galento ended up with a face that looked like a plate of blood soaked bacon

  • @tftmc lol
