The work seems to me to express a sort of nostalgia for something that was lost that is regained in the last movement, but not without a bit of melancholy. So many of the contemporary works for solo trombone that I've heard performed at two International Trombone Festivals try too hard to be 'modern', and I find them particularly unsatisfying.
