The WHALES make 45 gallons of Bock in the Stein Bier method of boiling with granite rocks. This is great way to get your clothes to smell like smoke and make beer too.

  • NICE. Since you made a lager style beer and fermented in the barrel, did you have a semi open fermentor using the barrel with a wooden lid and not sealed with an airlock? I guess your barrel was in a garage that was cold enough for fermentation, but not too cold. Very nice!!!

  • @bjcpc0337

We threw a piece of hard plastic over the barrel, but otherwise it wasn't sealed. The garage was a little warmer than we'd like, something like 62F because we had unseasonably warm weather that week. It would be better to do it a month later so you could add heat to the garage.

  • I'm interested in your results. I have attempted a stein beer as well, but not as much volume. Great video!

  • It definitely has a mineral flavor in the background but otherwise is a pleasant clean Bock.

  • We are a local club but a few members do drive a good hour and a half to get to meetings. However, it does seem that NJ has a pretty high homebrewer population. There are at least 4 active clubs here. I like to think we're the most aggressive as far as events and projects are concerned. Cheers.

  • I do enjoy some pretty great Schwarzbier. Is your club a locals only club? 60 plus members is pretty big, do you guys have chapters etc? I was actually looking to organize a brewing group in order to give Soldiers a better appreciation for beer both American and German. These guys out here can drink at 18. From the teet to the booze is what we say and many of them do not have hobbies that don't involve enjoying good crafted beer if you know what I mean. Much respect to you guys.

  • so it can get its Lager on?nice Have you been out west to any of the brewpubs or tasted any of the micro brews out there? There is some great beer out there in Northern California. I grew up out there but joined the army 6 years ago or so. I am now in Germany! The homebrew scene is not that great and I sure miss a good IPA which isn't as popular out here. I will be taking a trip to a "hobbybrau" store in Belgium this month most likely. I will be posting a video on here of my trip for sure

  • It will primary in the barrel for 2 weeks then all the shareholders will come and take their 5 gallon batches home and throw them in a fridge for 2 months.

  • Yeah, Chico, Ca.

The multiple yeasts were just what I had on hand in large slurries from previous batches. I didn't want to try building up a huge starter from one strain and we needed a crap load of yeast. Unfortunately none of the brewpubs around here were dumping lager yeast.

  • I forgot to ask, where the Chico Brewers from Chico California? Do all of those yeasts do well together? I always thought multiple yeasts didn't get a long. Just about all I have learned so far about brewing has been from you and the other good dudes on HBT. Great video as always!
