If you look at people who are considered the "best comedians of all time," people like Pryor, Carlin, Hicks, and so on, they thing that makes all of them different is that although they made irrelevant silly jokes that don't have any meaning and are just funny, every one of them and all the other "best" always attacked big issues and talked about something serious.
Obviously, they were hilarious while doing it, but they always had a deeper thought in there.
Then, they just go back to silliness.
