Kumamoto is also famous for 馬刺し - ba sa shi. The 刺し (sashi) bit is the same as 刺身 (sashimi). And well, 馬 means .... errrrr.... horse.

And it is raw.

Oh, I'm not looking forward to comments I'm going to get on this one!!!

Be genki,

Richard

  • is horse meet common in Japan. can u describe the taste?

  • @cjl5344 It didn't really taste of much really. In general in Japan the fattier the meat the "better" it is (go for cheap yakiniku as it has less fat!) so if it wasn't on the special - and that I wanted to show you guys! - I wouldn't have ordered it really.

  • Are you sure not horse mackerel? That's a pretty thick slab of muscle-heavy meat otherwise.

  • @nokomarie1963 Nope, it's 100% four legged mammal horsey horse!

  • it is REALLY DELICIOUS.

  • Did it taste good? I prefer eel and that sounds weird to my mom already but horse? And I've heard that the fatty part of tuna is one of the most expensive sushi in japan and it is one of the best. Have you ever tried it? I thing it was called otoro or something like that.

  • Hey Richard! If you want to eat extremelly good sushi, go to shinagawa, to the sushi restaurant of the Shinagawa Prince Hotel (the hotel is just in front of the station and the restaurant is on floor 38B if I remember well) !

I ate there the Best sushi of my life !!!

It was expensive, true (45 euro the cheapest menu) but it was totally worth it !!!

The fish and even the shrimp were of best quality super fat, it was like melting in your mouth <3

One advise ! go there !!!

  • was it good? ^_^ Genki desu ka??

  • haha I actually just tried that for the first time last night. It was my first night in Fukui where I will be living for the next year! Some people might bash it, but it's no different from eating any other meat, and it's actually very delicious. - I must admit the thought of eating raw meat is going to be difficult to get used to. I'm just glad it's yummy! :p

  • That looks naaasty.

Vegetarian sushi is way more おいしい!

  • yum sushi^_^

  • Poor Horsey.....

  • Good food at a good price.

    Thumbs up.

  • @iliveatseven11 The horse is "uma", the "kuma" from Kumamoto is "bear". Sorry for the confusion!
