The use of credit is an everyday occurrence for most of us - bank loans, credit cards, even the purchase of services.
A Credit Report provides information that shows how you've managed credit in the past. It includes the name and address of companies that have extended credit to you, such as banks, stores, and credit card companies. It also includes a summary of your payment history, and the maximum amount of credit extended. The report includes information about any judgments entered against you by a court.
Finally, it includes employment information, your social security number, your last known address, and prior addresses.
The Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act requires that your consumer credit report be kept confidential and used only for legitimate business purposes. Personal information in your credit file must not be provided to governmental agencies unless that agency obtains a court order. If the records contain adverse personal information, you must be informed if that information is released for employment purposes. Adverse information must be deleted after seven years, except bankruptcy cases, those must be deleted after ten years.
