Earth Day at the Glastonbury Holy Thorn.

A late upload of the Earthday event held at Glastonbury, England, on April 22 2011.
Shot entirely hand held, it maybe a tad wobbly for some people!

THE TREE.
The event was held on Wearyall Hill, Glastonbury, around the Holy Thorn tree, which was vandalised in December 2010.
The thorn's legend is that during the 1st century AD., the biblical Joseph of Arimathea, Christ's uncle, planted his staff into the ground near here, after arriving in Glastonbury with the Holy Grail and 12 followers. Joseph's staff eventually grew into the Holy Thorn.
The tree seen here isn't the original of course, but was planted in 1952. (One planted in 1951 died)
Joseph's tree was felled by a Cromwellian puritan during the English civil-wars in the 17th century, but fortunately cuttings were taken.
The Hawthorn tree is sacred to pagans too, and you can see many prayer ribbons on this tree's guard.
This species has its origins in the middle-east , is a hybrid and is allegedly that from which the Crown of Thorns was cut. It blossoms every year around Easter and Christmas. (Well, the undamaged trees in this town do)

THE CEREMONY.

This ceremony is led by Susan Hale from the USA., and starts with an explanation of what Earth Day is. The music is provided by Jana Runnalls, Oshia and many others.
Nicholas R. Mann participates.

The tree seems to be responding to all the love shown here, and new shoots are to be seen.

Another beautiful vid Mike! I had to work on Earth Day, but afterwards I went for a run on the NCR trial not far from my home. Quite a bit of the trail is canopied over by all kinds of trees and the trail crosses over some streams via wooden bridges. I always take in the natural energies when I am out there, but it seems even more special on Earth Day or Solstice, etc.
