Not really, there are a lot of people participating who are not exceptionally rich, among others I know of a few danish politicians (this surprised me greatly). They are not rich but hold a lot of power, one way or the other.

FTR I'm not American, and I do agree that American culture promotes vacuousness over intellectualism, but there is a HUGE difference between book smarts and business smarts, so don't get them confused.

BTW, Bill Gates stole or bought the majority of his 'ideas' so I wouldn't call him smart in the traditional sense. Smart in an opportunistic way, definitely. Thwart others to get ahead- that is a sick way of rationalising.
