Bée at Lago Maggiore, Italy reveals an entire village waving the cars into town, the police forming an honor guard and the mayor waves the checkered flag as the Audi Challenge cars roll across the finish line. Small boys are already swarming over the first cars, with ten year-old Sergio up front, How many cylinders does this big Audi have? Dodici twelve! Dodici??? And how many Cavalli? Cinquecento 500! Cinquecento????? Yes really, that is an Audi Q7 V12 TDI, and it completed our trip of roughly 2,600 miles with an average fuel economy of almost 24 mpgUS! It seems that Sergio is not as impressed by that but the other participants in the Audi Efficiency Challenge are. How about the Audi TT TDI at 47 mpgUS, the A4 TDI at 53 mpgUS, the Audi A3 1.6 TDI averaging 71.3 mpgUS. All of these figures are well above the NEDC combined. The Efficiency Challenge has proven that Audis fuel economy figures are close to reality and that even these figures can be undercut with an efficient driving style.
On the last day, Mother Nature pulls out all the stops with warm sunshine sparkling on mountain tops. After leaving Kitzbuehel, the Group drives the E60/E45 up the River Inn to Innsbruck. Shortly afterwards, the group dips into a series of tunnels, the longest of which is almost 9-miles long. Near Bludenz, the landscape opens up and the road turns northwards toward Lake Constance.
