4 - Allegro; 5 - Moderato; 9 - Andantino ; 12 - Allegro; 30 - Allegro

Czerny (1791-1857), student of Beethoven, and teacher of Liszt, published well over 800 works with opus number, and may well have used a workshop system to produce his large output of studies. This is a selection of some of the more lyrical pieces in the Op. 335 set (which I presume to have been written in the mid-1830s) - pieces that do not sound overtly like studies, and which are stylistically similar to shorter works by Cramer and Moscheles. Czerny did tend towards thick piano writing in his accompanying figues (eg. No. 4) that does not always sound comfortable on a modern piano. No 30 is very Schumannesque.

  • I really LOVE czerny!! He's my favorite composer :)

I will now send you a private message, I hope you answer it.

Thanks for sharing with us ;)

  • Thank you. I will be happy to answer your message!

  • Good morning Phillip ,you take me back to my school days and my piano tutor, Mr. Westbury who spent a lot of time getting me to play this lightly for I used to go at it and swing it to his horror. jannarta.

  • Thank you - swung Czerny could indeed be horrific!

  • I do play some of his music. I think I have recorded something by him which you can find on YouTube.

  • By thick writing, I mean that Czerny uses accompanying figures that are chords or octaves rather than single notes, which, on a modern piano can sound heavy and muddy. I try very hard to keep them under control in no. 4, but there are other pieces in the set for which I would not be able to do it!

  • Thanks for your comment. I don't normally 'do' sonatas on YouTube as they are too long, and nearly always have impossible page turns. However, I will certainly try to do some more Czerny (maybe more studies!)

  • Could you please explain your remark in the info. about the thickness of no. 4?

I myself didn't notice something uncomfortable in your playing. Thanks for uploading. Very nice playing.
