A Pope Air Force Base airman was killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday of wounds from the blast of a homemade bomb, the Pentagon announced today.

Senior Airman Ashton L. M. Goodman, 21, of Indianapolis, died near Bagram Air Field. She was assigned to the 43rd Logistics Readiness Squadron at Pope.

She is the first Pope Air Force Base female and the first member of the 43rd Airlift Wing to die in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Ashton made the ultimate sacrifice in her service to our great nation, said Col. John McDonald, the 43rd Airlift Wing Commander. We will all feel sorrow as a result of her death, but should celebrate in how she chose to live her life, her commitment and dedication.
