Yes he did look closer, the defender actually pushed him.

Because with this one he pushed him down before the other player touched the ball otherwise he could have made a play on it. With the second one he jumped in front of him and knocked it down when the receiver alreday established his position. That was the head of officiatings description of it.

Eric Brock bats the ball to the ground a good 5 yards in front of the reciever I'd say that's uncatchable. Even if the other Auburn defender wasn't there he's not catching that ball anyway because it is batted down in front of him. That's why the flag was picked up.
