The Jewish Outdoor Leadership Institute (JOLI) is a dynamic new program that trains Jewish teens (entering 11th &12th graders) to become competent and confident outdoor leaders. JOLI participants spend about half of their time at our rustic base camp, known as the Ramah in the Rockies ranch, living alongside chalutzim (pioneers/campers) in the Ramah Outdoor Adventure camp. Participants live in their own tent with a counselor but share facilities with chalutzim at Ramah Outdoor Adventure.

At the base camp, JOLI participants will have opportunities to experience most of the base adventure activities offered at Ramah Outdoor Adventure.

After acclimating to the Rocky Mountains high mountain peaks at base camp for five days, JOLI participants will leave for a twelve day excursion in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Under the supervision of select skilled staff, these young adults will focus on developing tangible leadership abilities while building their wilderness and survival skills. The program will specifically focus on group dynamics, ecological leadership, listening and communication skills, time management and decision-making, and risk management and prevention. JOLI participants will also learn and be evaluated on important wilderness skills including orienteering, wilderness survival, wild edibles, and Leave No Trace ethics. This trip will feature a twelve hour solo camping experience as well as a special Shabbaton in the wilderness.

JOLI participants will return to base camp for a final week of activities at base camp, where some will have an opportunity to put their newly developed skills to use as a leader on a three-four day backpacking trip, with staff support, for the youngest chalutzim at Ramah Outdoor Adventure.

JOLI graduates will leave camp having developed important reflective leadership strategies that are transferable to their lives back at home.
