In this National Science Foundation video, Jerry Beilinson, deputy editor of Popular Mechanics, discusses the future of electrical grids and the implications they have for the safety of the future.
In 1940, 10 percent of energy consumption in America was used to produce electricity. That number has now increased to 40 percent. As Americans become increasingly dependent on electricity, what is being done to make the nation's electrical grid more resilient and nimble?

  • I bet some already exist nowadays.

  • great talent .. very entertaining .. thanks

  • F**k the grid!

Sounds like a Rube Goldberg Machine, over-complicated.

Cheap Solar panels, battery storage, and back up NG generators!

  • I am not hearing anything about fly-wheels, for load levelling.

  • things are more like; new solution = new problem the cycle kept going

first burning coal 4 energy = problem is CO2

    dam hydropower = damage ecosystem

    solar power= ?

wind power or wave power = ?

when first coal were burned for energy people never thought of CO2 problem and now it a problem so who know what solar, wind, wave, or other power might bring what problem

  • Smart Grid is the future. Renewable energy sources like wind power is being considered the best option for the implementation of Smart Grid. Transformers help in the transmission and distribution of energy. Hence high quality transformers are needed for the efficiency and reliability of the 'smart' system. Transformer company, Pacific Crest Transformers specializes in the manufacture of liquid-filled distribution transformers. Visit the website for more on transformers and Smart Grid.

  • The host should stop going "umhmm", it is really distracting from what the speakers are saying

  • More Corp. welfare for Google IBM GE At&t.

  • SMART Grid-Tie inverters are here($250.00)! 1) hook up renewable energy source 2) PLUG into wall! DONE. sell unused energy back to the utility (purpa laws). Micro wind turbines (200.00 and cheaper). Also consider:

    - RF/EM harvesting

    - Piezoelectric materials to make energy

    - hydro turbine PIPES for homes

    - Wind turbine wall paneling for homes

    - wind/solar roofs

    - grid tied lawn and garden art

ALSO: Wi-Fi energy transfer. NO MORE Poles and wires. EVERYTHING IS ENERGY
